Base64 Encoder & Decoder

Encode and decode Base64 strings instantly. Free, fast, and secure. Perfect for developers working with data encoding.

Text Input

ℹ️ About Base64:

  • Base64 is encoding, not encryption - it provides no security
  • Encoded data is approximately 33% larger than the original
  • Commonly used for embedding binary data in text formats
  • All processing is done locally in your browser

Practical guide

Round-trip a UTF-8 message

Base64 represents bytes as text for transport. It is not encryption and does not protect a password, API key, or private document from someone who can read the encoded value.

Worked example

Enter Hello and encode it. The result is SGVsbG8=. Decode that value to recover Hello. A message containing emoji or accented characters is converted to UTF-8 bytes first, so it can also make a round trip without changing the text.

Check the result

For URL-safe input, the decoder accepts - and _ in place of + and / and handles omitted padding. Make sure you copy only the encoded payload, not a data: URL prefix or surrounding quotes.

Limitations to know

This interface is for text, not uploading arbitrary binary files. A valid Base64 sequence can contain bytes that are not valid UTF-8 text. Use an appropriate binary decoder when working with images or archives.

How to Use

Follow these simple steps for quick results

  1. 1Choose "Encode" or "Decode" mode
  2. 2Enter your text or paste Base64 string
  3. 3Click the corresponding button to process
  4. 4Copy the result to clipboard
  5. 5Download as text file if needed

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Base64 encoding?

Base64 is a binary-to-text encoding scheme that represents binary data in ASCII string format. It is commonly used to encode data for transmission over media designed to handle text, such as email or JSON.

When should I use Base64?

Use Base64 when you need to encode binary data (like images) into text format for embedding in HTML, CSS, JSON, or sending via email. It is also useful for basic data obfuscation, though not for security.

Is Base64 encryption?

No, Base64 is encoding, not encryption. It transforms data but does not provide security. Anyone can decode Base64 data. Never use Base64 alone to protect sensitive information.

Why does Base64 increase file size?

Base64 encoding increases data size by approximately 33% because it uses 4 characters to represent every 3 bytes of data. This is the tradeoff for converting binary data to text format.

Can I encode images to Base64?

Not with this interface. This tool encodes and decodes UTF-8 text; it does not accept image uploads or create image data URLs.

Is my data safe?

Yes, all encoding and decoding happens entirely in your browser. No data is sent to any server, ensuring complete privacy for your information.
